COT vs Delta: Which Signal Matters More Intraday on NSE?

Traders learning order flow on NSE quickly meet two labels: delta and COT. They are related but not the same — and when they conflict, one of them is usually more actionable.

Quick definitions

Delta

Delta measures aggressive volume imbalance:

Delta ≈ Ask volume − Bid volume

  • Positive delta → more aggressive buying
  • Negative delta → more aggressive selling

Delta answers: Who pressed harder in this bar or price row?

COT (order flow sense)

Here COT is not the weekly CFTC positioning report. In order flow UIs it usually means a commitment / strength / win-loss of aggression read: did buyers who lifted the offer actually push price, or did sellers absorb?

COT answers: Did the aggressor win?

When they agree

Best intraday trends on Nifty often show:

  • Rising price + rising delta + COT confirming buyer control
  • Falling price + falling delta + COT confirming seller control

These are “permission” conditions — not automatic entries.

When they disagree (the useful cases)

1. Positive delta, weak COT / stalled price

Aggressive buyers are active, but price will not advance. Classic buy absorption or trapped buyers at resistance. Fade or wait — do not chase.

2. Negative delta, price holds

Sellers hit bids hard; lows hold and COT flips or stays constructive for buyers. Classic sell absorption at support.

3. Delta divergence vs swing highs/lows

Price makes a higher high; delta makes a lower high. Without COT/absorption confirmation, treat as a warning, not a short trigger. With confirmation at a known level, it becomes a higher-quality reversal study.

Which matters more intraday?

Short answer: for entries and fades, COT/outcome usually beats raw delta. For trend continuation filters, delta (and especially cumulative delta) matters more.

Practical hierarchy for NSE index futures:

  1. Location (value, opening range, prior day)
  2. COT / absorption outcome at that location
  3. Delta / cumulative delta as confirmation of session pressure

Banknifty expiry caveat

Near weekly expiry, delta spikes are common and short-lived. Lean harder on:

  • Whether price accepts beyond the spike
  • Large-lot clusters (guide)
  • COT-style outcome rather than one explosive delta bar

Mistakes to avoid

  • Trading “+delta = long” on every bar
  • Mixing up platform COT with CFTC COT in research notes
  • Ignoring time of day — lunch delta noise is not an open-drive signal
  • Using ES settings for imbalance/COT thresholds on NSE without retuning

Conclusion

Delta tells you the effort. COT tells you the result. Intraday on NSE, results near good locations beat effort in the middle of nowhere.
